The UCSB Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry provides exciting research at the cutting edge of modern chemical and biochemical science. Our faculty is exceptionally distinguished, including two Nobel laureates, and publications from our department were the 7th most cited in the nation among all chemistry departments, as reported by Chemical and Engineering News.

We offer state-of-the-art facilities for research in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Graduates of the PhD program are well-equipped to pursue a wide variety of career options.

Our program fosters interdisciplinary collaborations both on campus and with scientists nationally and internationally. Affiliated research units on campus include the Materials Research Laboratory, the California Nanosystems Institute, the Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology, the Neuroscience Research Institute, the Marine Science Institute, the Center for BioEngineering, and the Mitsubishi Chemical - Center for Advanced Materials.

UCSB Adventure Programs exists to enhance campus and community life by providing educational and recreational experiences through wilderness trips, outdoor recreation classes, ropes courses, and climbing center programs. Our philosophy is to hire people who are responsible, enthusiastic, hardworking, and willing to learn. More important than technical experience in the activities we do, we want people who are "heads up" in terms of risk management, awareness, customer service and interested in professional development. Many of the skills necessary for employment can be learned on the job or during the Leadership Training Course.

The African diasporic Cultural Resource Center (AdCRC) educates, promotes, and encourages the interaction and dialogue among the diverse ethnic groups within the African diasporic communities of UCSB and to promote cross cultural learning and interaction amongst all ethnic groups. The AdCRC is an environment for students, staff, faculty and community members to develop an understanding of and appreciation for their African diasporic cultural identities. AdCRC staff strives to create and maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all to acquire knowledge in relation to the diversity of cultures within the African diaspora.

The AdCRC strives to assist in the holistic development of students of the African diaspora by focusing on several areas: academic excellence, cultural awareness, leadership development, social involvement, and proactive civic engagement. As a result of successfully developing our students in each of the aforementioned areas, the AdCRC, in turn, aids in the overall retention and graduation rates of our Black students at UCSB.

CLAS as a program is growing and evolving with the introduction of hybrid elements to our model. We have more modes of accessibility than ever before, and we are working to fine-tune them according to student feedback.

Comparative Literature majors take a global approach to the study of literature, crossing national and cultural boundaries (from Slavic to Spanish, from English to East Asian languages, from Italian to Arabic), while also crossing disciplines (from literary studies to Black Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and Film and Media Studies). They have the flexibility to tailor a sequence of courses to their own interests and to learn about diverse approaches to literature from ancient to modern times.

Welcome to the University of California, Santa Barbara's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), home of the Surfrider Battalion. Our program provides leadership training for students and trains future Officers for the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and U.S. Army National Guard. Army ROTC enhances a student's education and provides unique educational opportunities by combining leadership and management theory with actual hands-on experience. Army ROTC develops self-discipline, physical stamina, leadership, management skills and many other qualities essential to success in life.

The Army ROTC program at UCSB is not only academically demanding, but is well known throughout the nation as one of the top ROTC units. Westmont College, Santa Barbara City College and California State University at Channel Islands are affiliates of the Army ROTC program at UCSB. ROTC students from all three (3) affiliated schools attend the same Military Science courses as UCSB students, and participate in all ROTC events. Being a student at UCSB, Westmont College, California State University at Channel Islands or Santa Barbara City College, and learning to become a leader will make your college experience even richer and prepare you for a successful future.

Together, we serve UCSB's Sport Clubs teams! As an Athletic Training Intern (ATI) you learn the tools to work directly with Sport Club Athletes to assess, rehabilitate, and prevent injuries, as well as first aid and emergency care. ATIs gain valuable experience in the field of Sports Medicine with hands-on experience and guided mentorship from Certified Athletic Trainers. During weekly in-service meetings, all of our interns learn about anatomy, mechanisms of injury, and practice assessment and treatment skills.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is devoted to the research and teaching of the literatures, cultures and languages of Spain, Portugal and Latin America. We award the degrees of B.A. in Spanish or Portuguese, and PhD, with specializations in the areas of Spanish and Latin American Literature, Portuguese and Brazilian Literature, and Iberian Linguistics, with optional emphases on Translation Studies, Feminist Studies, Medieval Studies and Applied Linguistics.

These programs are supported by an outstanding and internationally recognized faculty representing the following areas of teaching and research: Peninsular and Latin American culture and literature, Portuguese and Brazilian studies, US Latino studies, translation studies, drama, critical theory, new media studies, popular culture, applied linguistics, and language pedagogy.

Each year temporarily and permanently disabled students attend classes at the University of California, Santa Barbara. They are attracted by the university's academic reputation, moderate weather conditions, and excellent physical accessibility offered here. The lay of the land is flat and free from environmental barriers and most physical structures are accessible. In addition, the UCSB campus provides excellent barrier free, modified, residential facilities to those students seeking to live on campus.

Providing academic accommodations to students with disabilities is a shared responsibility of the campus. Students with disabilities are responsible for ensuring that the Disabled Students Program (DSP) is aware of their disabilities and for providing DSP with appropriate documentation. DSP is located at 2120 Student Resource Building and serves as the campus liaison regarding issues and regulations related to students with disabilities. The DSP staff works in an advisory capacity with a variety of campus departments to ensure that equal access is provided to all disabled students.

Students with disabilities attending UCSB can be assured of receiving the same core support academic services offered throughout the University of California's System-wide chain of campuses.

Mission
Distribution & Logistical Services (DLS) is responsible for providing essential services that include UCSB Mail Services, Central Receiving, Furniture Services, Surplus Sales, as well as Materiel & Logistics for all units in the Residential Operations department. Surplus Sales manages the disposition of surplus property and inventorial equipment from all campus departments in accordance with UCOP policy. Furniture Services provides moving services including deliveries, setup, and takedown of rental equipment for numerous University events including Open House, Staff Appreciation, Commencement, Move-Out, Summer Conferences, Move-In, Convocation, Parents & Family Weekend, and various other luncheons, receptions, and departmental events that promote ongoing relationships with students, staff, faculty, alumni and donors. Materiel & Logistics for all units in Residential Operations provides centralized procurement and warehouse inventory at Building 507, as well as multiple storerooms throughout the HDAE portfolio that encompass over 4.4 million gross square feet of campus facilities and a residential program that houses over 10,000 students in apartments and residence halls.

STTP is an eight-day summer virtual program for incoming transfer students, the purpose of STTP is to facilitate the transition of EOP transfer students to UCSB. Students will be attending academic, social and career focused workshops and programs to provide opportunities to learn outside the classroom. The program requires a time commitment of approximately 4-5 hours per day including breaks. Participation is required in the workshops and social events, therefore, if you are unable to attend the program please let us know immediately so we can give your spot to another student.

The Department of Film and Media Studies at UC Santa Barbara is one of the leading international centers for education and research in our field. Founded as a small interdisciplinary program in 1973, and elevated to the status of an autonomous department in 1996, Film and Media Studies is now academic home to roughly 500 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students. Within a broad framework of liberal arts education, the Department’s undergraduate BA curriculum offers courses on the history and theory of film and media practices around the world; fiction and nonfiction filmmaking; video games, interactive, and web-based digital media production; screenwriting; archival and curatorial practice, and more. While the graduate core focuses on history, theory, and critical analysis, the MA-PhD program nurtures innovative research projects with an eye to the future of the field. The research of our distinguished faculty, which has helped define the discipline over time, is currently shaping new sub-fields around environmental media, media industry and policy, risk and media, data visualization, sound studies, and global and emergent media.

The study of French is an intellectual adventure that leads to the core of Western civilization. In language, literature, the arts, the media, political theory, philosophy and religious thought, France has played a key role in shaping the West as we know it today, with great scientists, artists, explorers and thinkers radically transforming our ideas about time, being, truth, justice and power. French is also an important global language, with more than 180 million speakers worldwide, including those in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. In today's global economy, mastery of French, especially when combined with English fluency, offers a powerful advantage to those entering the job market, going on to graduate or professional training, or considering work with aid agencies and NGOs. French is the third most requested language in the American labor market, particularly in sectors such as insurance, healthcare, finance, and humanitarian aid.

The Italian Studies Program:
The Italian Studies major is an intellectual adventure that leads to the core of Western civilization. It is an interdisciplinary major that combines training in Italian with courses that may be chosen from a broad spectrum of fields, including history, literature, sociology, art history, music, gender and ethnic studies, film studies, and translation studies. It enables students to gain a high degree of proficiency in written and spoken Italian while deepening their knowledge of Italy's history and culture, enabling them to understand Italy's role in shaping the modern world. Students who major in Italian benefit from all the advantages of a liberal arts education and are equipped to pursue careers in media, law, international commerce and finance, education, government service, travel and tourism, and communications, among others.

Traditional prevention programs may only approach men as potential perpetrators and women as potential victims. Green Dot approaches all students, staff, administrators, and faculty as allies. The original Green Dot program was conceived in the college setting to prevent dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking. It relies on the premise that if everyone does their small part and commits to individual responsibility, the combined effect is a safe campus culture that is intolerant of violence.

Our mission is to teach German and Slavic languages, and to research and teach the literatures and cultures of the peoples living in these languages. We offer classes that address the highly complex histories and cultures of German speaking and Slavic countries. While our classes are steeped in the histories of these different literatures and cultures, our faculty believes that studying the past has an impact on the present, and that studying the diversity of literatures helps our students understand the present in its complexity and with the many challenges of a globalized world.

About a decade ago, the Report of the Presidential Humanities Commission of the University of California noted that the humanities "can help all members of the university community, but especially students, learn how to negotiate our culturally diverse contemporary world in ways that are both knowledgeable and sensitive."

It is such knowledge and such sensitivity that the acquisition of other languages and the study of their multi-faceted literatures develop and foster in depth; in ways that deeply impact the learner's and researcher's life.

Welcome to the Department of History of Art & Architecture at UC Santa Barbara!

The teaching interests of the faculty are closely aligned with their research and form six clusters of expertise:

Art and Architecture of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds
Art and Architecture of the Early Modern World
Modern and Contemporary Art, Architecture, and Visual Culture
Architecture and Urbanism
Museum and Curatorial Studies
Theory and Criticism

Faculty expertise in these six clusters is exceptional for its intellectual diversity and global reach across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. We work across national boundaries as well as media and sites — painting, print, photography, popular art, sculpture, ceramics, architecture, cities, digital media — to define a global interdisciplinary field.

In the undergraduate curriculum, a new emphasis on global perspectives and intercultural exchanges joins the department's long-established strengths in European and Non-Western traditions. The department also offers two interdisciplinary undergraduate Emphases: in Architecture & Environment, a program that promotes an understanding of architecture within a complex matrix of social, geographical, and political factors, and in Museum Studies, a program designed to engage historical and theoretical questions with professional practice and encourage "hands on" experiences through internships.

The department's graduate program for the Ph.D. degree balances maximum flexibility with rigorous training in order to foster the creativity that is essential to the development of a vital discipline. Students are encouraged to utilize individual and collective faculty expertise to create specific fields of art historical inquiry. Feminist art history and gender studies, text-image relationships, art theory, technology and art, the epistemology of collecting and displaying objects, the study of urbanism and the cultural landscape are some noteworthy faculty interests. For those interested in museum careers, there are ample opportunities to work through our internship program with area institutions, including the Art, Design & Architecture Museum at UCSB, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Huntington Library and Art Collections; the department also enjoys a close working relationship with J. The Institute's energy efficiency research focuses on critical energy issues in three broad interdisciplinary themes; Smart Societal Infrastructure, Energy Efficient Computing and Communications, and the Food-Energy-Water Nexus. Projects within these themes build on and integrate UCSB's world-class foundational research in electronics, materials, photonics, computing and systems architecture, artificial intelligence / machine learning, and environmental sciences and policy.

The results of these interdisciplinary research projects are changing the way we use energy, while concurrently educating and training a new generation of energy-aware and sustainability-aware scientists and technologists.

The Latin American and Iberian Studies program offers interdisciplinary undergraduate courses for students in the program. LAIS course offerings range in type from lecture classes with discussion sections to small seminars taught by faculty affiliated with the program and individualized independent study. Faculty affiliated with the LAIS program offer these classes, assisted in some courses by LAIS graduate students.

In addition to the courses that LAIS offers, students also take courses in other programs and departments, including Art History, Economics, Film Studies, Music, Religious Studies, Spanish and Portuguese language and literature, Linguistics, History, Anthropology, Black Studies, Chicana and Chicano Studies, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Sociology, and Feminist Studies.

The McNair Scholars Program prepares qualified undergraduates for entrance to a PhD program in all fields of study. The goals of the program are to increase the number of first-generation, low-income and/or underrepresented students in Ph.D. programs, and ultimately, to diversify the faculty in colleges and universities across the country.

This federal program was established in memory of physicist and Challenger Astronaut, Dr. Ronald E. McNair. It is one of several TRIO programs funded by the Department of Education supporting the academic achievement of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. The UCSB McNair Scholars Program is funded by a 5-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education with additional support by the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and the deans of the College of Letters and Sciences and the College of Engineering. Some of our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) scholars are partially funded by Edison International.

The UCSB McNair Scholars Program provides undergraduates with opportunities to participate in academic year and summer research activities. McNair Scholars attend courses, seminars and workshops on topics related to graduate school preparation; complete a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor; and have the opportunity to present their research at local, regional and national conferences.

In 1987, UCSB students of color, who were then severely underrepresented at the University demanded the creation of a hospitable and safe space for their use. Such a space was intended to facilitate the retention and recruitment of students of color and to combat institutional racism and ethnocentrism. These aims were to be realized in part through educational programming, which would promote changes in attitudes and behaviors throughout the campus community.

Out of this initial impulse and the ensuing dialogues among students and allied faculty and staff, the MultiCultural Center was born. Students of color joined with international students to share a space, which, it was hoped, would realize these initial demands, and increase communication among people of different cultures. In time, recognizing the need to be inclusive of diverse value orientations, the MCC mission was broadened to include combating racism, sexism, and heterosexism.

UCSB struggles today with the same problems which necessitated the formation of the MCC. The MCC and concerned students, faculty, and staff continue to resist and confront these persistent forms of group oppression. In addition to continuing to provide a safe space for students of color, international students, and gay, lesbian, and bisexual students, the MCC serves as a bridge to the entire campus community. To that end, the MCC offers a broad spectrum of events including lectures, panel discussions, films and videos, musical, dance, and dramatic performances, and poetry readings, which are all open to the general public.

It is vital that the MCC always remain an autonomous site under the direct control of the MCC Board, composed of students, staff, and faculty. The MCC strives to support student activism and maintain a mutually supportive relationship with its student users, as they work together in pursuit of a more just society.

SciTrek exists to promote the synergies between science inquiry, language arts, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We work towards providing on-site resources for students, practicing teachers, and teachers in training to cover required grade level performance expecations and experience the processes that form the basis of all evidence based approaches to understanding our world.

Our focus is showing how reading and writing benefit when embedded in an inquiry-based science setting. This process involves initial observations, generation of questions, design of experiments to address the question, execution of experiments which students design themselves, data collection, analysis of data and its presentation to peers.

We strive to make it easy for school principals and classroom teachers to adopt the SciTrek learning modules (multi-session classes over 2-4 week periods) by providing resources and teaming SciTrek instructors (UCSB undergraduates) with the classroom teacher. All provided at no cost to the school.

Our work is guided by a belief that the scientific method creates a blend of curiosity and critical thinking that is an essential element in achieving curriculum goals. Our unwavering commitment to our community and advancing knowledge/skills of teachers and students is matched by a belief that learning about science should be fun and enjoyable, with life-long benefits of dealing with increasing complex societal issues.

The Student Mental Health Coordination Services (SMHCS) office is the single point of contact for the campus community to report concerns about a student in distress or a student distressing others. The Student Resource Building (SRB) was opened on February 14, 2007 after UCSB students voted to approve a fee to fund the construction and operation of the building. The building continues to be a hub for student activity and a popular study space on campus. The SRB contains cultural resource centers, conference rooms, a multipurpose room, and a multitude of departments. Every year, the SRB serves as the home for many popular events such as the winter involvement fair, dog therapy day, and Dia de Los Muertos, as well as programming from campus organizations.

During seven sessions of varying length (from the end of June to mid-September), Summer Sessions offers over 600 courses, including online courses, and works with faculty and departments to develop unique learning experiences in special courses and programs well suited to the summer term.

Summer Sessions makes it possible for students to get a head start and to make progress toward their degree year-round, with financial aid and housing available. Each year we welcome over 9,000 students to UC Santa Barbara for Summer Sessions.

Enrollment in Summer Session is open to everyone -- UC Santa Barbara students, visiting students from UCs and other US colleges, international and qualified high school students. No matter what type of student you are, only in-state unit fee prices apply.

Our activities include quarterly roundtables; a Dissertation and Prospectus Writing workshop; annual week-long visits by distinguished scholars; and the management of Exchanges, an annual peer-reviewed responsive journal produced by the Student Editorial Board that takes it theme from the annual interdisciplinary conference.

Mission
The University Center is the Student Union at UCSB offering a variety of products and services to students, faculty, staff, alumni and campus visitors. Approximately 10,000 visits are made to the UCen on an average day with additional visits of 5,000-6,000 at our satellite operations. The UCen also provides jobs for approximately 500 students giving them a "real world" learning experience outside of the classroom. We strive to contribute to the intellectual, cultural, social and recreational life of the campus.

Mission
The Women's Center is the primary organization on campus dedicated to providing education on women's issues, feminism, healthy masculinities, and gender and social equity. In addition, we serve as a conduit for many other women's and social justice organizations, and a site for mentorship and external educational programs. Our space and programs are available to all individuals of all genders interested in understanding how gender shapes our social world, and how we can work to eliminate all forms of gender-based oppression.

The Women's Center uses a feminist approach to provide support, advocacy, resources and education to the UCSB community. We value and respect all gender identities and presentations, bodies, sexual expressions, and racial and ethnic identities while challenging all forms of oppression. We work towards creating a campus environment that is safe, equitable, and just.
