The UCSB Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry provides exciting research at the cutting edge of modern chemical and biochemical science. Our faculty is exceptionally distinguished, including two Nobel laureates, and publications from our department were the 7th most cited in the nation among all chemistry departments, as reported by Chemical and Engineering News.

We offer state-of-the-art facilities for research in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Graduates of the PhD program are well-equipped to pursue a wide variety of career options.

Our program fosters interdisciplinary collaborations both on campus and with scientists nationally and internationally. Affiliated research units on campus include the Materials Research Laboratory, the California Nanosystems Institute, the Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology, the Neuroscience Research Institute, the Marine Science Institute, the Center for BioEngineering, and the Mitsubishi Chemical - Center for Advanced Materials.

The UCSB Academic & Staff Assistance Program (ASAP) supports the health and well-being of faculty, staff, and family members. We assist with identifying, managing, and resolving work-related and personal concerns that may affect job performance and relationships. We offer confidential short-term counseling, consultation, wellness workshops, and assistance with threat management.

UCSB Adventure Programs exists to enhance campus and community life by providing educational and recreational experiences through wilderness trips, outdoor recreation classes, ropes courses, and climbing center programs. Our philosophy is to hire people who are responsible, enthusiastic, hardworking, and willing to learn. More important than technical experience in the activities we do, we want people who are "heads up" in terms of risk management, awareness, customer service and interested in professional development. Many of the skills necessary for employment can be learned on the job or during the Leadership Training Course.

The African diasporic Cultural Resource Center (AdCRC) educates, promotes, and encourages the interaction and dialogue among the diverse ethnic groups within the African diasporic communities of UCSB and to promote cross cultural learning and interaction amongst all ethnic groups. The AdCRC is an environment for students, staff, faculty and community members to develop an understanding of and appreciation for their African diasporic cultural identities. AdCRC staff strives to create and maintain a welcoming atmosphere for all to acquire knowledge in relation to the diversity of cultures within the African diaspora.

The AdCRC strives to assist in the holistic development of students of the African diaspora by focusing on several areas: academic excellence, cultural awareness, leadership development, social involvement, and proactive civic engagement. As a result of successfully developing our students in each of the aforementioned areas, the AdCRC, in turn, aids in the overall retention and graduation rates of our Black students at UCSB.

The American Indian and Indigenous Cultural Resource Center (AIICRC) promotes cultural identity development and strives to empower indigenous students through their college careers. American Indian Student Support Services (AISS) directly supports American Indian/Alaska Native and Indigenous students with:

• Culturally enriched retention programming

AISS supervises administrative duties for the cultural college-exploration conference STANDS (Students Taking Action for Native Dreams of Success), and works closely with California tribal education programs to promote college readiness to Native youth.

Founded in 1959, UCSB Arts & Lectures is the largest and most influential arts and lectures organization between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Arts & Lectures annually presents more than a hundred events, from critically acclaimed concerts and dance performances by world-renowned artists to talks by groundbreaking authors and film series at UCSB and Santa Barbara-area venues. With a mission to "educate, entertain and inspire," A&L also oversees an outreach program that brings visiting artists and speakers into local classrooms and other venues for master classes, open rehearsals, discussions and more, serving K-12 students, college students and the general public.

The Asian Resource Center (ARC) is one of the five Cultural Resource Centers that is administered by the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Beyond Academia at UC Santa Barbara is a career exploration organization for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars of all disciplines. Inspired by UC Berkeley's Beyond Academia, our annual conference was established in 2015 and strives to educate about career options alongside and outside academia. Our goal is to help attendees develop an action plan that will help prepare them for the career of their choice.

CALTEACH PREPARES EXCEPTIONAL K-12 TEACHERS IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS!
CalTeach is a University of California system-wide program to recruit, prepare, and support exceptional K-12 teachers in science and mathematics. The initiative began in response to both state and national concerns about the critical shortage of highly qualified elementary and secondary teachers.

CalTeach at UCSB includes opportunities for both undergraduate students and graduate teacher credential candidates.

CLAS is a tutorial service at UCSB that provides group and individual content tutoring in math, science, statistics, economics, biology, chemistry, physics. In addition, CLAS tutors assist students with language acquisition in Russian, Italian, and Spanish and are available to help students with any piece of writing at any point in the writing process. CLAS also provides general academic-skills workshops and individual tutorials.

CMES is a research and outreach center, housed within the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (ISBER) at UC Santa Barbara. We develop and support programs that enhance public understanding of the Middle East and the interdisciplinary study of the Middle East. CMES affiliates have expertise in Middle Eastern history, politics, economics, religions, cultures and languages.

Our mission is to encourage critical and informed knowledge of the Middle East, and support critical Middle Eastern scholarship. We achieve this through lectures, workshops and seminars, providing grants, and a public education and a cultural outreach program for K-12 educators and students, among other means.

CLAS as a program is growing and evolving with the introduction of hybrid elements to our model. We have more modes of accessibility than ever before, and we are working to fine-tune them according to student feedback.

Listen to students. Tell us what they are worried about, what they are struggling with, what they are asking for. Tell us also where they are thriving, and where they are benefiting. Tell us what ideas you have for how we can better meet their needs, and how we can better meet yours.

Since 1967, the College of Creative Studies (CCS) has offered a small intellectual community of committed undergraduate students and faculty set within a major research university. CCS students and their faculty advisors work together to design a study plan that encourages students to take risks, to explore, and to develop their passion. Welcome to the Comparative Literature Program! If you have an independent mind, interests in global perspectives, and a commitment to the study of world literatures, you will find your intellectual home in our program.

Comparative Literature majors take a global approach to the study of literature, crossing national and cultural boundaries (from Slavic to Spanish, from English to East Asian languages, from Italian to Arabic), while also crossing disciplines (from literary studies to Black Studies, Chicana/o Studies, and Film and Media Studies). They have the flexibility to tailor a sequence of courses to their own interests and to learn about diverse approaches to literature from ancient to modern times.
