Join us and UCSB’s African Diasporic Cultural Research Center for a powerful session designed to teach historically marginalized identities the fundamentals of self-defense in a supportive and uplifting environment. We’ll be bringing back Teri McDuffie from Santa Barbara Women’s Self Defense to lead the self-defense class. This event is more than just learning physical defense techniques; it’s about building a community, fostering resilience, and reclaiming our strength. Together, we’ll learn to protect ourselves and each other, while also discussing the importance of safety and confidence in our daily lives. Come be a part of this empowering experience!

A personal note from our wonderful instructor, Teri:
My Self Defense Programs are designed to make sure all who attend feel comfortable, safe, empowered, enlightened and up-lifted. The programs are not fear-based but created to reach into personal strengths and bring them forward so that the participants can feel more confident, more Safety Aware and have more peace of mind. In my first hour of Self Defense I spend most of the time going over the Safety Awareness to avoid and sense potential danger BEFORE they are in direct danger. I will discuss Safety tips of Awareness which includes Spacial Boundary protection (Safe-Distance Setting), presenting a more powerful Body Language of confidence and preparedness and utilizing the strong projection of voice and power words. In the next hour the participants will spend time connecting with their own personal strengths and abilities. I will use targets to help discover their tangible strengths in action and also replicate (in a safe way) situations of danger such as being grabbed, knocked to the ground, pinned on the ground or on a wall and discovering what resources they can use around them to feel safer. By the end of the 2 Hour class the Participants will feel they experienced a great connection to their own personal strengths (both mentally, physically and spiritually) and each participant will feel empowered with more options of safety strategies with greater confidence!
