Familiarizing yourself with the standards of law and ethics for American journalists is crucial to building the courage to report accountability stories that are essential to any functioning democracy. While the press continues to be under attack, we will revisit the rights guaranteed to (student) journalists under the First Amendment, as well as what’s not protected. We will cover defamation/libel law, copyright/fair use, as well as ethical questions including the use of anonymous sources. You will learn best practices on vetting sources through sound reporting and fact-checking, and how to fight the spread of misinformation.
