This talk will place Harmonia Rosales' work in conversation with ongoing debates in the (elastic and shifting) field of Black classicism. It will examine how Rosales collapses the distance between ancient Greek and Yoruba mythologies, in a move that clears space for the representation of classicism as fundamentally and insistently Afro-diasporic in form and substance.

Dan-el Padilla Peralta is Associate Professor of Classics at Princeton University. His research and teaching focus is the Roman Republic and early Empire. He also works on classical reception in contemporary American and Latin American cultures. Forthcoming publications include Divine Institutions (Princeton University Publications); an essay on the politics of classical reception in Santo Domingo for The Oxford handbook of comparative political theory; and a contribution to a volume on classical receptions in the Black Atlantic.
